character information
● name: Wanda Maximoff
● canon: MCU
● canon point: Post-Age of Ultron
● age: Not given in canon; I'm going with 21
● (canon) background: Warning for spoilers!
● abilities: Also very spoilerific. I disagree with one of the points under 'fear manipulation' that the author is presenting as fact - I think Wanda has some level of direct control over the visions she shows people, and canon is silent either way. Aside from the inferred evidence that she didn't use certain arguably more effective figures against the Avengers (such as Frigga and Loki against Thor, because that would have been too low a blow), she makes a comment about Tony's vision that seems to support this. And since outright mind control is in her power set, it makes sense to me that she can control what someone sees.
Obviously I will make a permissions post for Wanda, and typically she will not attempt to meddle with someone's mind without a very good reason. If you feel like her powers will require nerfing, I'm cool with that, but I don't feel that she is at risk of breaking the game world or anything.
● strengths:
→ Resilience. Between the deaths of her parents, surviving horrific experiments, watching her home's destruction, and sensing Pietro's death, Wanda's been through more than her share of tragedy. But instead of collapsing, she always manages to push through. Her pain drives her to make sure someone else won't suffer tomorrow, both through submitting to the experiments and choosing to join the Avengers. She may need external support along the way, but she is a survivor at her core.
→ Compassion. Wanda cares deeply, sometimes too much. The twins were willing to risk a painful death to help their people and later go out of their way to help their neighbors. Wanda even sends Pietro away to help with the evacuations because she knows how many lives he can save. They grew up relying on each other and Wanda understands the value of a strong support system. While she is often the one being comforted in the movies, I firmly believe this goes both ways and that she cares just as deeply for her friends as they do her.
→ Insightful. Wanda gets people even without her powers and she's good at guessing motivations. For example, she never trusted Strucker, and she's able to generally predict Tony's creation of Ultron and Vision. After the twins abandon Ultron, Wanda seems to innately trust Steve, even though she's initially wary of all the other Avengers.
Wanda's unique bond with Vision is a combination of the two above points. She's much more patient than the others with his difficulties in understanding humans and societal cues. In contrast to the others, Wanda never makes him the butt of joke. He's different, but he's still a person, and that kind of behavior won't fly in her presence. And despite being at odds in Civil War, Wanda eventually overcomes her vengeful side and is able to forgive his part in her captivity.
● weaknesses:
→ Vengeful. Wanda has a frightening temper when the people she cares about are hurt or in danger. It leads her to make mistakes (abandoning the 'key' to hunt down Ultron to avenge Pietro), miscalculate (the fiasco with the Hulk in Johannesburg), or do things she'll later regret (slamming Vision through the floor when she'd already made him let go of Clint). An angry Wanda is a terrifyingly dangerous Wanda...but she is also not fully in control and can easily lose sight of the bigger picture.
→ Fear. After AoU, Wanda has come to understand and fear how destructive her powers can be. She is quick to internalize the fears of people around her, and in Civil War we see her confidence dwindle to a bravado that melts completely under actual pressure. Wanda will see Riverview as a fresh start and will try not to cultivate the same atmosphere of fear she experienced at home. She won't try to hide her abilities completely, but she will generally attempt to downplay some of them. For example, she might admit to being empathic but would very much try to hide that she can read and manipulate minds.
→ Guilt. Wanda is extremely quick to blame herself and spiral into emotional paralysis. If her powers are really so terrifying, what is the point of them if she can't save everyone? Her guilt over her inability to stop Ultron and save Pietro was a factor in her joining the Avengers, and her horror over the disaster in Lagos renders her ineffective for the rest of Civil War. She can be talked out of her paralysis by someone who refuses to indulge it, but without an external force to snap her out of it, Wanda's guilt is more effective than any house arrest at holding her back.

→ Resilience. Between the deaths of her parents, being one of two survivors of horrific experiments, and feeling her twin's death, Wanda's been through more than her fair share of tragedy. But instead of collapsing, Wanda always pushes through in the end. She does not want other people to suffer what she has suffered and will push herself through to protect them if she can. She may need external support along the way, as anyone would, but Wanda will always manage to pull herself together eventually.
→ Compassion. Wanda cares very deeply, sometimes too much. The twins were willing to risk a painful death to have a chance at protecting their people, and as soon as they escaped Strucker's base, the first thing they did was hand out medicine and creature comforts to their neighbors in need. The twins grew up needing to rely on each other and Wanda knows the value of having someone to support you. While Wanda is often in the position of being comforted in the movies, I firmly believe this goes both ways and that she cares just as much for anyone she considers a friend as they do her.
→ Insightful. Wanda gets people even without her empathic powers and she's good at guessing motivations. For example, the tie-in comics reveal that she never trusted Strucker, and from one glimpse into Tony's mind, she's able to make accurate predictions about what actions he is likely to take. After the twins abandon Ultron, Wanda seems to innately know that she can trust Steve, even though she's initially wary of all the other Avengers.
Wanda's unique bond with Vision is a combination of the two above points. Wanda seems to be much more patient than the others with his difficulties in understanding humans and societal cues. All the other characters who mention Vision eventually crack a depersonalizing joke about him except for Wanda. He's different, but he's still a person, and that kind of behavior won't fly in her presence. And despite being at odds in Civil War, Wanda is able to overcome her vengeful side eventually and understand that Vision didn't mean for her to get hurt.
● weaknesses:
→ Vengeful. Wanda has a frightening temper when the people she cares about are hurt, in danger, or in need of avenging. It leads her to make mistakes (abandoning the key to hunt down Ultron to avenge her brother), miscalculate (the fiasco with the Hulk in Johannesburg), or do things she'll later regret (slamming Vision all the way through the Avengers compound when she'd already made him let go of Clint). An angry Wanda is a terrifyingly dangerous Wanda...but she is also not fully in control and can easily lose sight of the bigger picture.
→ Fear. After seeing what happened in a moment of lost control, Wanda has become terrified of her own powers. She is quick to internalize the fears of people around her without Pietro to support her, and in the time span between Age of Ultron and Civil War, we see her confidence dwindle to a bravado that melts completely under actual pressure. Wanda will see Riverview as a fresh start and will try very hard not to cultivate the same atmosphere of fear she experienced at home. She won't try to hide her abilities completely, but she will attempt to downplay some of them unless she's around someone else with powers or someone's in danger. For example, Wanda might admit to being empathic, because it is hard to hide that level of perception completely, but she would very much try to hide that she can read and control minds.
→ Guilt. Conversely, Wanda is also extremely quick to blame herself and spiral into emotional paralysis. If her powers are really so terrifying, what is the point of them if she can't save everyone? Her guilt over her inability to save Pietro was a factor in her joining the Avengers, and her horror over the disaster in Lagos renders her mostly ineffective for the rest of Civil War. She can be talked out of her paralysis by someone who refuses to indulge it, like Clint, but without an external force to snap her out of it, Wanda's guilt is more effective than any house arrest at holding her back.
